Pope Francis has selected a Nigerian, and Bishop of Ekwulobia, Peter Okpaleke to be ordained as a cardinal on Saturday, August 27, 2022, by the Catholic Church.

Bishop Okpaleke is one of the twenty bishops selected by the pope for ordination as Cardinals.

The new cardinals are known for their progressive views and their pastoral work, and they are citizens drawn from Brazil, Nigeria, India, Singapore, and East Timor.

After Saturday’s swearing-in at St Peter’s Basilica, they will join a two-day meeting of all cardinals starting Monday, August 29, 2022.

Pope Francis will be chosen as 90 out of the 132 cardinals eligible to elect a new pope, around two-thirds of the total percentage needed for any proposed name to pass.
