Afrobeat superstar Femi Kuti has lampooned supporters of the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election in Nigeria – Peter Obi, calling them zombies.

“You know what obedience means?” Kuti asked, during a musical performance at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos Thursday night. “Stand up, sit down, sit there — zombie.”

Kuti said he wondered why Obi’s popularity had grown rapidly in recent months.

“How can you be Obidient in this chaos? I am not Obidient. Tell me, at 60, why am I Obidient? You said I should be Obidient, sit down, be peaceful. Are you all okay in this country?”

Obi’s candidacy for president has gained huge support especially among the Nigerian youth who refer to themselves as “obedient” and see him as the pick of the bunch jostling to become Nigeria’s president next year.

Femi Kuti is the son of world-renowned creator of afrobeat music genre, Fela Kuti, who died in 1997.

Zombie is the album-titled song Fela released in 1976.

Femi Kuti has so far not expressed preference for any of the presidential candidates.
