The Ogun State Police Command reported that a 33-year-old man suspected of being an armed robber, Akeem Owonikoko, has alleged that a police inspector identified as “Ola” supplied him and his gang with firearms.

The arrest of Owonikoko took place during a sting operation on the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, led by ACP Omosanyi Adeniyi, the Area Commander for Ijebu Ode, as per a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola.

Owonikoko, who was said to have been terrorizing the Obalende area in Ijebu Ode, was seen around 12:30 am driving a Toyota Camry towards Ijebu-Ode. Upon spotting the police team, he and his gang members reportedly fled into the bush, abandoning the car.

Owonikoko, who had disguised himself as a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, was subsequently apprehended during a search of the area.

The police found various items, including expended cartridges, live cartridges, a locally fabricated short gun, and other weapons in bags abandoned in the vehicle.

Additionally, a man named Sunday Dosunmu, aged 53, recently released from prison, was rearrested while trying to steal a car using specially made fabricated keys. Dosunmu had previously been arrested by the Divisional Police Officer of Kemta, Abeokuta, CSP Adeniyi Adekunle, in the Olorunsogo area of Abeokuta on September 17, 2022. He was caught again by local youths in the area, attempting to unlock cars and drive them away using fabricated master keys.

CP Abiodun Alamutu, the Commissioner of Police in the state, commended the officers for their efforts in cracking down on criminal elements. He mentioned that the suspects would soon be brought to court to face charges for their actions.
