The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has suspended its Ebonyi State chairman – Tochukwu Okorie.

Emmanuel Nworie, deputy chairman of the party, told newsmen Monday in Abakaliki that the party’s State Working Committee, SWC, suspended Okorie for a period of one month for alleged gross misconduct.

Mr Emmanuel Nworie, the party’s Deputy State Chairman told journalists after the committee’s emergency meeting on Monday in Abakaliki.

Okorie abandoned party activities, including failing to call for executive meetings for four months since he was reinstated as the state party chairman by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, Nworie said.

The suspended party chairman allegedly joined an aspirant to file a suit against the party in the state, Nworie added, saying “it is unlawful and unacceptable by the SWC members.”

Okorie said his suspension was illegal, stating: “It is only the national leadership that can suspend me.”

“I am a member of the National Executive Council of the party and no member of the state working committee has the power to suspend me,” he said

“On the alleged gross misconduct, I am the chairman as directed by the court. I have the prerogative power to access the party’s account to carry out party activities.”

The decision to suspend Okorie was taken at the SWC’s emergency meeting held Monday in Abakaliki.
