One of Okezie Ikpeazu’s legacies as governor of Abia State. This is (maybe was as of earlier this year) Amaku Health Centre in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state. This is just a snippet of what primary health centres have become under Ikpeazu’s watch. It is in health centres such as this that Gov. Ikpeazu encourages women to go and have their babies, promising to pay any woman who delivers a baby in any of the state-owned primary health centres (mostly in the same shape as this one and littered across the state) N500 (five hundred naira), equivalent to $1.20 (one dollar, twenty cents in USD) as a reward for doing just that. Thankfully, following the hue and cry that trailed Ikpeazu’s “…are you asking a poor woman what will she do with N500? Some people don’t have it. At least it will pay their way back home,” Federal House member, Darlington Nwokocha, came to the rescue by promising to refurbish this particular primary health centre situated in his constituency. We are working on establishing if he’s begun keeping his word. What about the rest of them?
